Planting & Care Tips
- Planting location - Full sun to partial shade. They prefer at least 6 hours of sun daily.
- Soil - Well-drained soil is important. Avoid planting in areas where water collects.
- Spacing - For hedges, plant Emerald Green Arborvitae 2–3 feet apart; Green Giants 5–7 feet apart.
- Watering - Water deeply after planting and during the first growing season. Once established, water during dry periods.
- Mulching - Helps keep roots cool and moist.
- Pruning - Minimal. Trim lightly if needed to shape.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ARBORVITAE
- Deer browsing - In some areas, deer love Arborvitae foliage. Protection may be needed.
- Winter burn - Cold winds and winter sun can sometimes bronze the foliage. Mulching and burlap wrapping can help.
- Root rot - Poor drainage can stress or kill young Arborvitae. Plant in well-drained soil.
- Crowding - Plant with enough spacing so roots and branches don’t compete.
